FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Thermal printers are usually used as point of sale receipt printers, and impact/dot matrix printers are usually used as kitchen printers.
WHY?
Thermal printers do not require ink or toner, which can save money over time. However, because thermal printers are heat-sensitive, they may not be as effective in hot climates. Impact printers are the better choice for high-heat environments such as kitchens.
The SP742 impact printer is Clover’s compatible kitchen printer.
The best interface connection for a POS printer depends on various factors including compatibility with your POS system, speed requirements, convenience, and reliability. Here are some common interface options and their characteristics:
USB (Universal Serial Bus): USB is one of the most popular interface options for POS printers. It offers fast data transfer speeds, easy installation (plug-and-play), and compatibility with most modern POS systems and computers. USB connections are reliable and widely supported.
Ethernet (LAN): Ethernet connectivity allows the POS printer to be connected directly to a local area network (LAN), enabling multiple devices to share the printer. Ethernet connections offer stable and reliable communication, making them suitable for high-volume printing environments. They are often used in larger retail or hospitality setups where multiple POS terminals are interconnected.
Serial (RS-232): Serial connections, also known as RS-232, have been a standard interface for POS printers for many years. They offer reliable communication over longer distances and are commonly used in legacy POS systems or environments where serial connections are still prevalent.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth connectivity allows wireless communication between the POS printer and the POS terminal or mobile device. Bluetooth printers offer flexibility in placement and are suitable for mobile POS applications or environments where running cables is impractical.
Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi connectivity enables wireless communication between the POS printer and the POS system or network. Wi-Fi printers offer flexibility and convenience, allowing printers to be placed anywhere within the Wi-Fi network coverage area. They are suitable for environments where running cables is difficult or where mobility is required.
